The effect of different extraction methods on the composition of samples of soluble cuticular lipids (SCL) of Citrus aurantium L. was investigated. The variation of extraction yields, when whole leaves were immersed in solvent, was studied as a function of solvent type and duration of immersion. Cuticular waxes were also quantitatively extracted from isolated cuticular membranes of C. aurantium and their composition was compared to that of samples obtained by the immersion method. Significant differences were observed. Higher carbon number homologues of the aliphatic constituent classes were discriminated against when whole C. aurantium leaves were extracted by immersion. The alkyl ester fraction was almost entirely lacking in extracts from whole leaves. The dependence on carbon chain length of the saturation concentrations in chloroform of major aliphatic SCL constituents was determined. The results are discussed in terms of the major physico-chemical processes involved in the extraction of SCL.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on wet plant cuticles has been investigated with the following techniques: Calorimetry, densitometry, spin-label electron-spin-resonance-(ESR)-spectroscopy, photo bleaching, and light and electron microscopy. At low temperatures cuticles ofCitrus aurantium L. andHedera helix show, at 16.3°C, a sharp transition (T0.5°C) with a latent heat of 4.7±0.5 J g-1-cuticle. Below transition: The main orientation of the polymer matrix is parallel to the normal of the cuticle and the main orientation of the layer with soluble lipids is perpendicular to the normal. The cuticle is in a rigid state. Above transition (between 16.3°C and 38°C): Only the orientation of the polymer matrix has changed (tilted in parts). There exist several very sharp (T0.1°C) transitions (38°C, 41°C, 45°C, 49°C, ...) with a latent heat in the order of 0.4 J g-1-cuticle. Above 38°C: The lamella of the soluble lipids is in a fluid state. Above 45°C there is a change in the molecular orientation of the soluble lipids as well as in the polymer matrix. The soluble lipids are mainly oriented parallel to the normal. The dry cuticles show no phase transition between 0°C and 200°C. The effect of temperature on water permeability of plant cuticles (astomatous Citrus leaf cuticles) has been investigated. The Arrhenius plot (logarithm of the permeability coefficient vs. 1/temperature) has two linear portions that intersect at 44° C. Evidence is presented to show that this intersection represents the solid/liquid phase transition of cuticular lipids. As the Arrhenius plot has only one phase transition in the temperature range of 5 to 80° C, it appears that all soluble cuticular lipids in the cuticle are present as a homogeneous mixture rather than as individual layers differing in composition. This view is supported by electron spin resonance evidence showing homogenous distribution of spin label fatty acids. The original distribution of soluble cuticular lipids is irreversibly altered by heating cuticular membranes above the transition temperature. The Scandinavian post‐glacial history of the moss Rhytidium rugosum is traced on the basis of information from the nuclear markers ITS and gpd for 229 Scandinavian and 81 other specimens. Some haplotypes, groups or lineages identified in a NeighborNet split network are predominantly northern Scandinavian, whereas others are southern. With the distributions of individual haplotypes and the timing of the deglaciation in different parts of Scandinavia, this implies colonization from the south and from the north or north‐east. High haplotype and nucleotide diversity and the occurrence of certain private haplotypes in the north suggest that the species may have survived the Last Glacial Maximum in local refugia. Slightly higher numbers of private haplotypes in Scandinavia than in central or north‐eastern Europe also favour an explanation with at least some local glacial survival. Low diversity in the southernmost contiguous region of the Scandinavian mountain range is probably a result of recent land uplift and late colonization. The Scandinavian lowland regional populations probably represent remains of an earlier widespread population that became increasingly restricted to small and isolated areas when the vegetation closed during the post‐glacial period. Abstract: Positive interactions between species are known to play an important role in the dynamics of plant communities, including the enhancement of invasions by exotics. We studied the influence of the invasive shrub Pyracantha angustifolia (Rosaceae) on the recruitment of native and exotic woody species in a secondary shrubland in central Argentina mountains. We recorded woody sapling recruitment and micro‐environmental conditions under the canopies of Pyracantha and the dominant native shrub Condalia montana (Rhamnaceae), and in the absence of shrub cover, considering these situations as three treatments. We found that native and exotic species richness were higher under Pyracantha than under the other treatments. Ligustrum lucidum (Oleaceae), an exotic bird‐dispersed shade‐tolerant tree, was the most abundant species recruiting in the area, and its density was four times higher under the canopy of Pyracantha. This positive interaction may be related to Pyracantha's denser shading, to the mechanical protection of its canopy against ungulates, and/or to the simultaneous fruit ripening of both woody invaders.  相似文献

The performance of microflotation, dispersed air flotation with microbubble clouds with bubble size about 50 μm, for algae separation using fluidic oscillation for microbubble generation is investigated. This fluidic oscillator converts continuous air supply into oscillatory flow with a regular frequency to generate bubbles of the scale of the exit pore. Bubble characterization results showed that average bubble size generated under oscillatory air flow state was 86 μm, approximately twice the size of the diffuser pore size of 38 μm. In contrast, continuous air flow at the same rate through the same diffusers yielded an average bubble size of 1,059 μm, 28 times larger than the pore size. Following microbubble generation, the separation of algal cells under fluidic oscillator generated microbubbles was investigated by varying metallic coagulant types, concentration and pH. Best performances were recorded at the highest coagulant dose (150 mg/L) applied under acidic conditions (pH 5). Amongst the three metallic coagulants studied, ferric chloride yielded the overall best result of 99.2% under the optimum conditions followed closely by ferric sulfate (98.1%) and aluminum sulfate with 95.2%. This compares well with conventional dissolved air flotation (DAF) benchmarks, but has a highly turbulent flow, whereas microflotation is laminar with several orders of magnitude lower energy density.  相似文献

Two new species ( Neuropteris terminiscus and N. kneuperi ) are described from the Bolsovian ('Westphalian C') of Saarland. N. terminiscus had previously been misidentified as Paripteris pseudograndinioides , but the pinnae are clearly imparipinnate and thus cannot belong to that morphogenus. N. kneuperi had previously been misidentified as Neuropteris obliqua and N. heterophylla , both which appear to be absent from Saar-Lorraine. This is considered further evidence of the distinctive nature of the Westphalian vegetation of the Saar-Lorraine Basin, especially among the seed-plants.  © 2002 The Linnean Society of London , Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society , 2002, 139 , 193–205.  相似文献

Using the land‐bound vertebrates on the marine islands as model organisms, two metrics are presented that permit quantitative and succinct synopses of the ‘evolutionary maturity’ of the hosted faunal assemblages. In turn, these reflect the geo‐physical settings and geological developments of the substrates. The assemblage lineage‐taxonomy spectrum (ALTS) is based on the constituent lineages’ taxonomic distinctiveness and diversity. Individual lineages within assemblages can in most cases be assigned to one of six categories, LT1?LT6: LT1 is a non‐endemic taxon, whereas LT6 comprises multiple endemic genera from a family that arose elsewhere. If required, the scheme can be expanded: LT9 is an endemic order. The data can then be combined to provide an assemblage spectrum, for example, 00:08:38:30:08:15[ 13 ]. Here, the first six values denote the number of lineages assigned to each category expressed as percentages of the overall total, with the sum of the processed lineages listed as the seventh (in brackets and bold). The ALTS metric highlights efficiently the key features of a marine island's biological assemblage. Notably, the contrast between spectra for suites on geologically and geo‐physically varied island types can be striking, for instance the squamate suite on the young, proximate orogenic margin island of Taiwan is coded 78:16:05:00:00:00[ 37 ] whereas the one on the distantly located, Late Eocene composite terrane island of New Caledonia is 00:11:00:11:33:44[ 9 ]. To overcome the subjectivity that is inherent in assigning supraspecific ranks, an alternative assemblage lineage‐age spectrum (ALAS) is also introduced that makes use of the binary logarithm values of the colonization times of the island lineages (0–2, 2–4, … , 32–64, >64 Ma). It is represented using a seven‐plus‐two‐number code, for instance Madagascar's squamates are 00:06:00:00:19:62:12[ 19 ( 16 )]; most colonizations took place in the Palaeogene (66–23 Ma); there are 19 lineages, but only 16 are presently age‐dated. In addition to marine‐island biogeography studies, the ALTS–ALAS spectrum approach is potentially useful for encapsulating biotas in other sorts of insular setting (e.g. lakes, mountain tops), and for evaluating palaeogeographical models. Furthermore, it may help emphasize the conservation value of an island's faunal assemblage.  相似文献
